About Chris

Chris Wenlock (b.1947) lived and worked for most of his life in Maldon, Essex. Whilst working in the
family business he always drew and painted and at 17 he joined the local art class on his day off. This
proved to be an important formative experience. Mentored by local art teacher Jean Sunderland he
was encouraged to explore various forms of painting, drawing and sculpture. From these beginnings
Chris’ passion and talent for landscape painting developed and has led over the years to numerous
exhibitions in East Anglia and acceptance at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition. Since retiring
Chris has focussed full time as an artist and in recent years has produced two one man exhibitions at
the Hayletts Gallery, Maldon as well as exhibiting with the Colchester Arts Society where he now
resides.
Working predominantly in oil on canvas, his work is inspired by the North Essex and Suffolk
landscape featuring the fields, skies, grasses, wild flowers, dunes, marshland, dilapidated buildings
and lopsided beach huts found in these locations.
